That’s right, Toto, we’re in Darmstadt now!
A Quick Update: My Artist Residency in Horb ended on July 31st. But…an opportunity opened up to participate in another Residency in Germany, this time in Darmstadt, a city that’s 99 miles north of Horb and just 15 miles south of Frankfurt. This new Artist Residency in Darmstadt is a satellite of the Kunstort ELEVEN Artspace in Starzach, where I was a Resident in 2018. But unlike the lengthier last two Residencies, this one will run for just the last two weeks of August, so it will be short and sweet. I’ll be coming home after that.
During the two weeks between the two Residencies I stayed in Horb. Helena was kind enough to let me stay in her place while she’s in Munich. With Walerija also out of town I was the only one at the large Antonie-Leins-Künstlerhaus – well….Picasso the cat stopped by every day to keep me company. I like Picasso. She’s a good listener and she shares my immense interest in cheese. We had a lot of good times together.
I enjoyed my last two weeks in Horb. It was quiet, and peaceful, and I had time to reflect on this whole crazy time in Germany – the people, the places, the moments that I know I will cherish and remember the rest of my life.
While Picasso and I enjoyed our quiet time, there were also adventures right up until my last day in Horb. My friend Steffi and my new friend Yveline took me out on a number of day trips to villages a distance away. I can’t begin to tell you all the fun we had, although I will try to in future Posts. Among our adventures: We climbed a tower in Rottweil that stretched into the sky, we saw a large spring called Blautopf where the water is so blue it will make you weep; we took a rowboat down the Neckar River, and we climbed the highlands in the Black Forest where on a clear day you can see Strasbourg. These times with these beautiful people are blessings that I cannot measure.
Last Monday I left Horb and took a train to Darmstadt. I’ve been here for several days now. It’s a pretty big City with lots to see and do. Lots of good food here too. But it’s easy to get lost! Back in Horb I had the big church steeple right next to my house so no matter where I was I could always find my way home. Here it’s a little tricky. I’m living in a nice neighborhood in the upscale outskirts of the city. It’s like the East Side of Providence back home. But Darmstadt is more than twice the size of Providence. You can’t walk everywhere you want to go, and the further you go, the further your journey home. Ain’t that the truth….
