During my first Artist Residency in Germany back in 2018, I learned that there are wild boar here in the woods. This fact was both fascinating and frightening. While I don’t know much about boars, I’m certain that I can not outrun one or overpower one, which pretty much makes me dinner. I don’t want to be dinner.
When I called home and told my friend Cliff about the boars, he was unfazed. He said to just treat them like any dog: Roll them over, rub their belly, and say “Who’s a good boar? Who’s a good boar?” over and over again until they’re your friend.
So that was really bad advice.
I don’t spend a lot of time in the woods here but when I do venture off the beaten path I am always aware of my surroundings – always listening for movement or the sound of guttural grunting. Fortunately I have yet to see one in person. However I did see the large head of one mounted on the wall at the Castle Schloss Weitenburg in Starzach Börstingen. That one I could outrun….
