‘The Story Teller’ is the first figure that I created in this series, and appropriately so. The inspiration for this piece is the fact that Horb am Neckar feels like a fairytale to me. I wanted this series to elicit that same sense of wonder – that an unexpected encounter with these magical little figures would surprise and delight passersby.
It was during my recent visit to Kunstort ELEVEN when I first shared this idea, and it was well received by my fellow Artists at the gathering. As a matter of fact, Ewe shared with me that there was a famous writer from this very area who wrote many fairy or folk tales that are still shared today. The writer’s name was Wilhelm Hauff and he was a Württembergian poet and novelist. He’s best known for writing “Heart of Stone” (German: Das kalte Herz). It was published in 1827 in a collection of fairy tales that take place within the narrative of The Spessart Inn. It formed the basis for the East German film Heart of Stone from 1950.
Learning that made me even more excited about this project! I can’t help thinking about all the stories there are to tell…all of the stories in Horb, past and present…
